Festival of Perth Closing Event

“Rockets, balls of fire and fountains of flame drench city buildings in lurid colours”

Engaged as Creative Director of the Festival of Perth Closing Events in 1994 and 1995 Gary Chard created public spectacles entertaining up to ten thousand people. Processions meandered through streets leading to site specific environments where identities personifying festival characteristics performed. Patrons were immersed in scents, sounds, pyrotechnics and lighting shows.
Additionally, Chard was engaged to design the Festival of Perth Club in 1994 and 1995 drawing reference from each annual Festival poster design. The first year, an exquisite cabaret set combining Caribbean influences, floating policemen and smoking chimneys provided the platform for the performances of the Club’s resident bizarre cabaret artist Astrid Haddad.
